St. Francis Medical Center and Cape Area Safe Kids Coalition are providing the Cape Girardeau Fire Department with booklets needed to present the Life Safety Education Program to Cape Girardeau's second and fourth grade students this year.
The booklets are distributed to students and cover topics including fire safety, bike safety, earthquake preparedness, poison prevention and more. The information also has puzzles and word games.
"Without the coordinated effort of St. Francis Medical Center and Safe Kids Coalition, we would not have been able to continue this educational program this year," said Michael Morgan, the fire department's public education officer. "The children gain needed information that can help prevent fires and will teach them and their parents what to do in many emergency situations."
The program will be distributed to 840 students. Topics are taught by classroom teachers. Fire department personnel help when requested. This is the second year for the program locally.
