A structure fire at 1217 N. Spanish St. caused an estimated $10,000 in damage Monday night, according to a news release from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. The fire was called in at 11:32 p.m.
One of the occupants was taken to a hospital by Cape County Private Ambulance with possible smoke inhalation, according to the news release. The fire department did not disclose the name of the person or the hospital.
Smoke detectors in the home alerted occupants to the fire, the release said.
The blaze, which assistant fire chief Mark Hasheider said started in a family room in the rear of the house, was brought under control in about 10 minutes. Hasheider said the cause is undetermined.
When called to the location, firefighters were told one person still was inside. The initial call was for 617 N. Spanish St., the release said. While en route, a dispatcher told firefighters there was another call of the same type for 1217 N. Spanish St.
Units found nothing in the 600 block and went to the 1200 block of Spanish Street, the release said. When firefighters arrived, they found a story-and-a-half frame structure with fire in the rear of the structure.
