CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Crews from the Chaffee, Oran, Mo., and NBC fire departments battled a house fire for nearly four hours Monday afternoon.
The house, owned by Mike and Susan Schwartz, 432 Black St., was heavily damaged. According to witnesses, one person was at home at the time of the fire, but she and her pets were able to safely exit without injury.
Several onlookers watched as flames engulfed the second story of the home. Witness Raymond Spies of Chaffee reported the fire at approximately 1:30 p.m., when he saw smoke coming from the roof and flames through a downstairs window.
According to Chaffee assistant fire chief Rob Jenkins, the cause of the fire is under investigation. Jenkins said the home is more than likely a total loss.
