An accidental fire caused by a space heater damaged a house Thursday in Cape Girardeau, a fire department official said.
Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief Brad Dillow said the fire at 625 N. Lorimier St. was reported at 11:41 a.m.
Dillow said 18 firefighters, from all four fire stations, responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported.
A space heater located too close to a bed in the basement of the house sparked the blaze, Dillow said. A male resident of the house tried to put out the fire, but without success.
At least two people were home at the time of the fire, Dillow said. All of the occupants had evacuated the house before firefighters arrived, Dillow said.
The basement suffered extensive fire damage and there was moderate damage to the house overall, he said.
