A faculty member at the Columbia Area Career Center was injured when she tried to use a fire extinguisher, the fire department said. Pearl John suffered minor frost bite burns from carbon dioxide, which is cold gas used in fire extinguishers. She was treated at a hospital and released.

The fire was contained to the northwest wing of the center, which houses a laser laboratory and storage area.

About 450 students and 35 staff members were evacuated from the building.
