JEFFERSON CITY Missouri turkey hunters bagged 32,945 gobblers during the two-week spring turkey season, in spite of difficult weather conditions and a dearth of mature gobblers.
Rain and cold weather made hunting difficult during much of the season April 20 through May 3, but hunters bettered the 1991 harvest figure by 775 birds. This year's kill also compares favorably with Missouri's all-time record of 35,951 gobblers, set in 1987.
Counties posting the highest harvest totals this year were the same as in the 1991 spring turkey season. Hunters killed 1,019 gobblers in Franklin County (compared to 961 last year), 944 in Texas County (compared to 829 last year) and 849 in Laclede County (compared to 795 last year).
East-central Missouri and central Missouri led the state's nine regions, with 5,188 and 5,043 birds checked, respectively. A total of 2,272 turkeys were bagged in the Southeast Missouri region.
Ten turkey hunting accidents were reported, down from the 16 last year. None of the accidents either year was fatal.
