Financial exploitation case bumped again

Circuit Judge Benjamin Lewis extended Keith Monia's case once again Monday afternoon.

Monia faces six counts of financial exploitation of the elderly, one count of forgery and one count of theft of property or services in the amount of $25,000 or more in Cape Girardeau County.

His attorney announced Monday she needs more time to go though his case and asked to reschedule in 30 days. Lewis agreed and will be seeing Monia again May 11.

On April 7 it was decided in Stoddard County Court that the former Cape Girardeau businessman would have a pretrial conference Sept. 16, with a jury trial to begin Sept. 24 before Judge Robert N. Mayer.

In Stoddard County, Monia faces felony charges of forgery and financial exploitation of the elderly as well, over about nine months, Monia allegedly promised to make investments of $120,000 and $100,000 in annuities for a couple but never invested the money.

The charges are from Sept. 10, 2010, and June 17, 2011, in Scott County.

In most of those cases, Monia is alleged to have taken clients' money, promising to invest it in annuities plans, then failing to do so.
