Dr. Corliss McCallister, an adjunct professor at Southeast Missouri State University, will spend June and July on a fellowship at private Northwood University at Midland, Mich. The fellowship with provide her with undisturbed time to work on the manuscript she is writing with her husband, Michael McCallister.
Another person awarded Alden B. Dow Creativity Center fellowships at the university this summer is a California composer researching how crystals are harmonically ordered. She plans to use the patterns as blueprints for musical compositions.
Yet another Dow fellow is an author writing about her six-month, 1,500-mile trek from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) to Hanoi along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
The fourth recipient of a fellowship is a Hawaiian visual artist who is using images of birds to communicate the contradiction of birth as the beginning of death.
Established in 1979, The fellowship program is named for an architect who encouraged people to think creatively. Northwood specializes in managerial and entrepreneurial education, and emphasizes the importance of free enterprise.
Preserving free markets and promoting the relationship between business and the arts are two of the college's goals.
The public in Midland will be invited to attend a presentation of the artists' projects, and McCallister will present workshops and hold discussion groups to get feedback about her manuscript.
