Whenever a new building is constructed in Cape Girardeau it requires a permit. And the permits require a fee.

Permit fees are based on square footage for new buildings. For remodeling, fees are based on cost with fees set consistently for a number of items.

Sewer and water service installation fees make up a big chunk of developmental fees at $750 for sewer tap fee for 3/4-inch water line, or $1,460 for tap fee for 1-inch lines.

It costs $200 for water service 3/4-inch line and $293 for 1-inch line. Cost increased for larger lines.

New construction fees average 5 cents a square foot of the building up to 2,500 square feet. Building sizes between 2,501 square feet and 10,000 square feet cost $125 plus 4.5 cents a square feet more than 2,500. For structures of more than 10,000 square feet the permit fee is $462 plus 3.75 per 1,000 square feet more than 10,000 square feet.

Fees for a 30,000 square-foot building total $537 ($462 + 75).

Remodeling can range from a flat fee of $20 for remodeling costs up to $3,000, to $121 for a $50,000 project. A flat fee of $41 is charged for first $10,000 and $2 each for each additional $1,000 for the next $40,000.

Other flat fee permits include:

-- $30 for a billboard.

-- $10 for a demolition.

-- $5 for residential driveway.

-- $10 for commercial driveway.

-- $15 for plumbing permit plus $2 per fixture.

-- $10 per electrical permits, $2 per circuit.
