KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The National Park Service isn't interested in taking over the financially-troubled Liberty Memorial in Kansas City.
Mayor Mark Funkhouser recently said he'd be thrilled if the federal government would run the memorial and its World War I museum to ease the city's budget crunch. Some city council members agreed with him.
But city parks officials said Tuesday that during a recent visit to Washington, a deputy director of the federal agency made it clear that it doesn't want control of the memorial.
City Parks Commissioner Tyrone Aiken said he hopes the official's remarks put the matter to rest. But a spokesman for Funkhouser said the mayor does not consider the conversation over.
