FBI, IRS raid St. Louis towing company

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Agents from the FBI and IRS raid a towing company at the center of the scandal that led to the retirement of St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa.

Agents on Tuesday raided the offices of St. Louis Metropolitan Towing. The FBI would not say why.

Mokwa retired last month amid concerns over a seized car scandal that involved his daughter and members of the department.

For years, the department contracted with the company to take vehicles seized during arrests. If unclaimed, the towing firm, through its sales subsidiary, sold them.

Police revealed that the firm allowed many officers to borrow the vehicles, sometimes for weeks or months at a time. Authorities also say Mokwa's daughter, Aimee, was allowed to borrow them and buy three at less than wholesale value.
