FRUITLAND, Mo. -- The person killed in a two-vehicle crash near Fruitland Wednesday was identified as a 19-year-old Fruitland woman.
Seven people were injured in the accident and were in stable condition Thursday at a Cape Girardeau hospital.
Jennifer Stiagmeyer of Fruitland was pronounced dead at the accident scene by Cape Girardeau County Coroner Mike Hurst. Stiagmeyer died of head injuries, Hurst said, although she was wearing a seat belt.
The accident at Route C and U.S. 61 occurred on wet roads Wednesday evening. Two helicopters and several ambulances responded, transporting the victims to St. Francis Medical Center.
The wreck occurred when a pickup truck driven by Jacob Schubert of Steeleville, Ill., turned from Route C onto U.S. 61 and lost control, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. The 22-year-old's pickup was struck by a sport utility van driven by 29-year-old Loren Eldridge of Jackson, Mo.
Stiagmeyer, along with 20-year-old Sarah Stiagmeyer, were riding with Schubert.
Eldridge's passengers included 33-year-old Lisa Eldridge of Jackson and three children, ages 8, 5 and 3.
Of the eight people in the accident, only the 8-year-old boy was not wearing a safety device, the patrol said.
