Family decides not to have funeral for gunman who killed two mo

CONCEPTION, Mo. -- The family of a man who fatally shot two monks at a Roman Catholic abbey before turning the gun on himself has decided not to hold a funeral for him.

At the funeral Mass Friday for the Rev. Philip Schuster and Brother Damian Larson, several monks said they wished to attend the service for Lloyd Jeffress.

The Jeffress family, however, has chosen not to have a funeral. Instead, Jeffress will be cremated without ceremony and his remains given to his brother or his daughter, said David McWilliams of the McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin, Mo.

Jeffress opened fire Monday in the hallway of the monastery that adjoins the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Two other monks were critically injured.

One of them, the Rev. Norbert Schappler, 75, attended Friday's funeral with medical workers attending to him.

Both Schappler, who was immediately returned to the hospital, and the Rev. Kenneth Reichert, 68, are expected to recover. Reichert also remained hospitalized.
