The screening, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer, and skin cancer, one of the most common forms of the disease, will be the focus of the 1992 Fall Cancer Symposium.
The annual event, scheduled to be held Saturday and Sunday at the Show Me Center, is co-sponsored by the Regional Cancer Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital and the American Cancer Society.
Physicians and nurses from throughout the area are expected to attend the symposium, which will include in-depth presentations on lung and skin cancer as well as informal round table discussions on a number of topics.
Visiting faculty for the symposium include St. Louis lung transplant specialist Dr. Joel D. Cooper and Columbia, Mo. dermatology specialist Dr. Ronald Swinfard.
Four Cape Girardeau physicians will have presentations dealing with lung cancer: Dr. Paul H. Cordes, pathology; Dr. Michael G. Higgins, radiology; Dr. Joseph P. Miller, radiation oncology; and Dr. Brock P. Whittenberger, hematology-oncology. A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Robert S. Hunt, surgery, will conclude Saturday's activities.
On Sunday, Cape Girardeau physician Dr. Walter A. Schroeder will address the group on the "Diagnosis and Treatment of Oral Cancer." His talk will be followed by four round-table discussions led by Cape Girardeau physicians Dr. John P. Hall, urology; Dr. Stanley D. Sides, hematology-oncology; Dr. Michael C. Wulfers, family practice; and Whittenberger.
