The faculty at the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music will host a chamber music recital March 1 to honor the first recipients of the Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarships.

The recital, scheduled for 3 p.m. in Rose Theatre, is sponsored by Southeast President Kala Stroup and Southeast's Department of Music.

"We want to recognize Margaret Woods Allen's contributions to the Department of Music and to the University and to present the recipients with the first Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarships," said Dr. Sterling Cossaboom, chairman of the Department of Music.

The scholarships were established last year by Allen, a Sikeston resident and music enthusiast. Allen, an accomplished violinist, created the scholarships to financially help talented piano students pursing a music degree.

Allen received the "Friend of the University" award from Southeast Missouri State University in 1987. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.

She also is a charter member of the President's Council, the Copper Dome Society and the Horizon Club. Allen also has published "Widow's Might, A Survival Guide to Investing." Proceeds from the book were donated to the university's foundation for scholarships.

The Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarships cover the cost of incidental fees, room and board, and private piano lessons.

Recipients must be pursuing a bachelor of arts in music degree, a bachelor of music in education degree or a bachelor of music in performance degree. Four performance-based scholarships will be awarded annually.

Cossaboom said the recital will include the awards presentation by Allen and comments from Stroup.

The recital will feature performances by: faculty members Marc Fulgham, Barry Bernhardt, Dallas and Jean Tjaden, Robert Gifford, David Green, Louisa Panou-Takahashi, Gary Miller, James Sifferman, and Sara Edgerton; graduate student Karen Walker; and community musician Ron Walker.

The recital will open with a performance of "Brass Quintet, op. 65" by the brass quintet of Fulgham and Bernhardt, trumpets; Karen Walker, horn; Gifford, trombone; and Ron Walker, tuba.

Following, will be a performance of Darius Milhaud's four-movement "Suite" by the piano trio of Dallas Tjaden, violin; Green, clarinet; and Jean Tjaden, piano.

Yannis Kostantinides' "Three Greek Songs" will be performed by Panou-Takahashi, soprano; and Miller, piano.

The program will close with a performance of Johannes Brahms "Sonata for Cello and Piano in E minor, op. 38" by Edgerton, cello, and Sifferman, piano.

General admission tickets are $3 for adults and $1.50 for students and senior citizens. Students with university identification will be admitted free. All proceeds benefit the Department of Music Scholarship Fund.
