"Access and Vehicles: Paintings and Pastels" by local artist Wayne McDowell will be exhibited at the University Museum at Southeast Missouri State University. The exhibition begins with an opening reception for the artist Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

The paintings and pastels by McDowell share with gallery visitors the artist's love of local landscapes. They are related to each other in a body of work that shows his focus on the sky, horizon and land, as seen through his studio window. In some of the pieces, the landscape has dominance; in others, the window frame is emphasized.

Over the past year, McDowell's art has progressed toward a more formal focus of the window frame. In these pieces, a central vertical column of the sash becomes a divider that minimizes the view beyond.

According to McDowell, the window is the "access" to the "vehicle" of landscapes. By vehicle, he means that the landscape is a place to reflect and ponder. Because McDowell places the horizon line of his scenes very low on the picture plane, one gets an impression of great depth and vast empty space in the sky.

McDowell, who attended The Memphis Academy of Art, paints full time in his studio-home near Oak Ridge.

The University Museum is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
