The Excelsior Optimist Club of Cape Girardeau recently held its annual oratorical and essay contests.
The theme of the oratorical contest was "If I could see tomorrow." Winners were chosen in both boys and girls divisions.
Winners in the boys division were Tim Mayfield, first place; Saki Ligonis, second place; and Adam Vickery, runner-up.
Winners in the girls division were Laura Sheets, first place; Sarah Essner, second place; and Katie McCann, runner-up. Winners from both divisions will advance to the zone level and compete again.
The theme of the essay contest was "Challenge to a free Society."
Winners of the contest were Greg Robinson, first place; Carol Rene Robinson, second place; and Matt Jackson, third place. All the winners were from Cape Girardeau Central High School.
First-place winner Greg Robinson will advance at the district level on Feb. 15.
Excelsior Optimist member Christy Benton coordinated the oratorical contest and member Flo Johnson coordinated the Essay Contest.
