The Excelsior Optimist Club of Cape Girardeau is sponsoring an essay contest open to all high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.
The topic for the contest is "The Boundaries of Freedom." Essays must be original and submitted by Dec. 23 to the Excelsior Optimist Club.
The club will select a first, second and third place winner in the contest. The first-place entry will be forwarded to the district competition where it will be judged against other winning entries from Southeast Missouri.
The first-place district winner will receive an expense-paid, four-day trip to the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge, Penn., next July, for the Freedom and Leadership Conference.
District winners will then be forwarded to the international competition where first, second and third place winners will receive scholarships in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
