Nitzschke was president of the university from 1996 to 1999. He then served two years as university chancellor in charge of fund raising before his hiring as a legislative consultant.

University officials said the relationships he has developed with Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson have helped the university obtain millions of dollars in federal funding during recent years of lower state funding.

The amount of Nitzschke's previous contract was $160,000.
