CLAYTON, Mo. -- The former executive director of a taxpayer fund to help St. Louis County children is blaming a misunderstanding for an FBI investigation that led to her firing.

Kate Tansey was head of the St. Louis County Children's Service Fund until she was let go in October. She told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that a $1,700 personal check to her from a consultant was at the heart of the FBI investigation.

The potential conflict of interest was apparently enough to spur the FBI inquiry.

Tansey says the investigation found no wrongdoing. A spokeswoman for the FBI declined comment.
