Rocky Everett and Shelly Moore will advance to the April city council election for Cape Girardeau's Ward 2 seat after Tuesday's primary.

Everett and Moore bested Craig David in the contest that narrowed the field.

Tuesday saw a very low voter turnout in Ward 2, where there are 3,857 eligible registered voters. Only 51 ballots were cast at the polls, which were open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in four locations on Tuesday.

Unofficial results from Cape Girardeau County Clerk Kara Clark Summers showed Everett with 29 votes, Moore with 14 and David with eight.

By 10 a.m., only 14 people had cast ballots. Summers said voter traffic also failed to pick up as snow and ice began to fall and road conditions worsened Tuesday afternoon and evening.

"Due to the weather, I just want to thank the people who came out and voted today," said Everett on Tuesday evening.

Everett is CEO of Heartland Spine Institute in Cape Girardeau. He is a military combat veteran and co-owns Annie Laurie's Antiques on Broadway and Everett Property Management.

Moore is a real estate agent, a gospel recording artist and a volunteer with the United Way's River Corridor Connection.

"I'm very, very happy about it," she said of the election results after being contacted by phone Tuesday night. "I'm very grateful to be given the opportunity to move forward."

Ward 2 covers the southern section of the city and downtown. Current councilwoman Meg Davis did not seek re-election because she is moving out of the ward. The candidate who wins the April election will serve a four-year term.

Also on the April ballot for city council in Cape Girardeau will be Teresa Robinson and Joseph Uzoaru in Ward 1. Incumbent Mayor Harry Rediger also has a challenger, Walter White. Councilman Wayne Bowen is unchallenged in Ward 6.
