A two-week residency by the Katherine Dunham Dance Company will highlight activities held at Southeast Missouri State University in observance of Black History Month.

The University's dance programs are hosting the company through Feb. 13. Master classes in Dunham technique -- a combination of African-American, Caribbean and modern dance styles -- will be conducted at Southeast, as well as in the Cape Girardeau public schools, the Cape Civic Center, and the Kennett area.

Katherine Dunham is a major modern dance choreographer who worked in Hollywood and on Broadway for 40 years and has a dance troupe and museum in St. Louis.

Among the featured events during the company's visit will be a keynote lecture and panel discussion Saturday at 2 p.m. with Dunham if her health permits. It will be held in Academic Auditorium. The lecture will be followed by a reception at the University Museum.

Another highlight of the company's residency will be a university/community performance by the Katherine Dunham Dancers at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in Academic Auditorium. Admission will be free for students and $2 for adults. Joining the Katherine Dunham Dance Company in this performance will be the university dance troupes DanceXpressions and Ahrai.
