JANUARY 6 Contra Dance: Want to learn how to dance the old-school way? The Cape Girardeau Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will host its Contra Dance at Christ Episcopal Church from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The dance is taught and called to live music, and no experience is necessary. The event is open to the public.

JANUARY 20 Trivia Night: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a trivia night beginning at 6 p.m. at the Cape Senior Center, 921 N. Clark St. Teams of eight will compete to be crowned Southeast Missouri's smartest. For more information call 334-9233.

JANUARY 27 and 28 Paper Mosaic Workshop: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a paper mosaic workshop with internationally known artist Russell Irwin. FEBRUARY 1 Paxton Williams: Historian and George Washington Carver impersonator Paxton Williams will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. at Academic Hall Auditorium.

FEBRUARY 3 Penguin Party: The Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation will host a Penguin Party at the Cape Country Club from 6 to 11 p.m. as part of its annual drive. Through Jan. 21 The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art will host its annual Faculty Exhibition at the Southeast Missouri Regional Museum on the university campus. The exhibition includes work from 12 university art faculty members in a variety of styles and media. For more information call 651-2260.

Jan. 5 The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host an exhibition by local artist Lou Varro and nationally known artist Russell Irwin in its galleries at 32 N. Main St. Varro's work consists of paintings, while Irwin's work consists of both paintings and paper mosaics. For more information call 334-9233.
