In a dismal turnout Tuesday, Cape Girardeau voters ousted Board of Education President Ferrell Ervin in favor of newcomer Martha Zlokovich.

Just 5 percent of the district's 25,885 registered voters cast ballots in the three-way race between Zlokovich and incumbents Ervin and Mark Carver.

Two, three-year terms were up for election.

"I didn't know what to expect," said Zlokovich, who received 901 votes and becomes the second female to join the board in two years. She said she agrees with the long-range goals set by the school board and plans to work with other board members to win support for an operating tax increase voters will consider in August.

"I'm looking forward to learning whatever it is I need to know," Zlokovich said.

Ervin, who had served as board president for four of his six years on the school board, received 517 votes. He attributed his loss to the community's desire for a change in leadership rather than from fallout from the board's decision last month not to rehire high school principal Randie Fidler.

Said Ervin: "I'm not sure that ever, when you have an election, that it says anything about a vote of confidence. There's always a point when a community or district wants to have a change."

Carver was out of town and learned of his re-election with 874 votes late Tuesday night. He said he hopes the board will define its role in the district and continue to work toward established goals during his second term.

"I think the one key issue that has got to take place is the Cape Board of Education needs to understand what its role is," Carver said. "We have needless and unnecessary controversy. The overall direction of the district has been thought out years ahead of time, so we know what we need to do there."
