Janie Hydrick of Mesa, Ariz., past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, the largest subject matter organization in the field of education, will speak on "Standards for English Language Arts" at a luncheon meeting of the Southeast Missouri English Teachers Association Friday at Southeast Missouri State University.
All area English language arts teachers and administrators concerned with curriculum development are invited to attend the noon program in the Missouriana Room of the University Center.
The National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association will release the "Standards for English Language Arts" this month. The publication of the standards will end a three-year process that began when the Center for the study of Reading at the University of Illinois called upon NCTE and IRA to participate in the Standards Project for the English Language Arts.
Over 2,000 professional associations and literacy organizations, affiliates and task forces representing thousands of teachers, administrators and parents have helped to define and to clarify key issues in the standards' development.
Lloyd Smith, U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson's chief of staff, also will be a guest at the luncheon. He will update the English teachers on the current status of language legislation at the national level.
Reservations for the luncheon and presentation are $10 and should be sent to Dr. Linda Burns, English department, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, 63701. Monday is the registration deadline. For more information, contact Burns at (573) 651-2618 or 334-5238.
