Voters in Scott County are split in their stance on the law enforcement sales tax extension on today's ballot.
In both Sikeston and Scott City, the county's two largest cities, some are voting against the extension because of a lack of a sunset provision, objections to how the money might be used or because of opposition to excess taxation.
"There's no sunset clause," said one Scott City man who didn't wish to give out his name. He and his wife both voted no on the tax issue. "I won't vote for a tax with no sunset clause."
Another Scott City woman voted yes for the tax because "it just felt right."
Poll workers at Sikeston's Airport Ward 2 precinct, the First Christian Church on Main Street, said turnout had been low at about mid-day. Workers at Scott City's lone polling station reported low turnout in the evening, even for a municipal election.
The Scott County Clerk's office expects election results to be released by 8:30 p.m.
