JACKSON -- Jamie Kimbel of Jackson recently completed his Lyndon Baines Johnson Internship with U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.
Kimbel worked as a staff assistant in Emerson's Washington, D.C., office since January. Only one college student per year from southern Missouri is selected by the 8th District congressman to serve as an LBJ Intern.
"I believe congressional internships give our nation's youth a chance to learn and to experience first-hand how our system of government operates," Emerson said. "By participating in the process, such as Jamie has as an LBJ Intern, you learn things that are not possible from just reading textbooks."
Kimbel was selected through an application process that included academics, student leadership through extra-curricular activities and letters of recommendation from community or civic leaders.
"It's an excellent opportunity that all college students should have the chance to experience -- regardless of their major or their career interests," Kimbel said. "By working for Congressman Emerson, I have learned how government can affect all of us one way or another and how each of us should have a complete understanding of how our governmental system of democracy works."
Kimbel is a senior at the University of Missouri-Rolla, seeking a degree in aerospace engineering. He is a 1988 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Tom and Jo Ellen Kimbel of Jackson.
