MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man opened fire outside a house after a drug deal went sour Wednesday, injuring three adults and five children inside the home, police said.

A 3-year-old girl and a 59-year-old woman, who were hit in the chest by bullets that flew through the home, were in critical condition, said deputy police chief Bob Wright said.

Wright said a group of young men got into an argument about a block away from the house and one of them fled, eventually running into the house. It was unclear whether he lived at the house.

Some of the men got into a car and followed the man. At least one man opened fire on the brick house, spraying bullets into windows and a door.

"We know it's over a small quantity of drugs," Wright said, but it wasn't clear if two 14-year-old girls, a 13-year-old girl and a 22-year-old woman were wounded by bullets or hit with shrapnel.

A 4-year-old boy was wounded in the shoulder and a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg.

Both were expected to recover, Wright said.
