Eight recipients of scholarships were announced by The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. & A.M. and the Harmony Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star during the groups' scholarship awards banquet this week.

"These are four-year scholarships to the universities and colleges of the recipients' choice," said George C. Brooks, chairman of the scholarship committee.

In attendance at the scholarship banquets were representatives of Prince Hall Grand Lodge and the Harmony Grand Chapter of Eastern Star. The two groups are holding their annual conventions in Cape Girardeau this week.

Also present was Jeanne Livers, a 1976 Cape Central graduate who received a four-year scholarship from the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge when she graduated from high school.

Livers, now a mathematics curriculum consultant for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Jefferson City, was guest speaker at the scholarship banquet. She is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.

Another past scholarship winner, Tiffany Ford, is a recent Southeast Missouri State University graduate.

None of the eight students selected for scholarships this year will be attending the local university.

Alvin Riney Jr. and Corey Johnson will attend the University of Missouri-Columbia; Dawd Hasam will attend UM-Rolla; Shonesia Washington will attend Central Missouri State at Warrensburg; and Dave Derrick will attend Northeast State University at Kirksville.

Other students selected were Ivan Benson, who will attend the University of Illinois; Christopher Lee, University of Kansas; and Yolonda Smith, Hampton Va. University.
