BRENTWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- A suburban St. Louis school district is trying fight childhood obesity by getting kids to skip the ride and walk or bike to school.
The Brentwood School District's "walking school bus" program seeks to reverse a long-standing trend. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday that about 13 percent of children ages 5-14 walk or bike to school. That's significantly lower than the 48 percent who did so in 1969.
Some parents wonder if it is safe, citing concerns not only about predators but about the increased volume of traffic.

The Brentwood district is one of just three in Missouri -- Clayton and Jennings, both in St. Louis County, are the others -- that do not offer bus service because of their small geographic size.
