While students stock up on pencils and paper for the start of school, educators spend days, even weeks, making sure everything is ready for the first day of classes.
In Cape Girardeau, public schools begin Aug. 26, said Superintendent Neyland Clark.
On Aug. 24, all employees of the district will gather at the Show Me Center for an opening-of-schools event. Local business and community leaders are also invited.
Missouri's Education Commissioner Robert Bartman will speak, as will Ronald Stephens with the National School Safety Center. Clark said he is working to secure other speakers.
After lunch, employees will report back to the Show Me Center for training sessions on topics ranging from sexual harassment, school safety and stress management.
Actually, the Aug. 24 meeting is a culmination of planning meetings that began last week with administrators.
"We have to plot where we want to go. We also set specific program objectives within the district," said Clark.
Notre Dame
Notre Dame High School will open its doors on Aug. 20 with freshman orientation in the morning followed by a book sale until 1 p.m.
All students will report to classes on Aug. 23 at 8 a.m.
Notre Dame welcomes an increased enrollment with 288 students.
A freshman lock-in is planned Aug. 27. Get-acquainted activities are planned for freshmen by seniors, teachers and parents.
New features of the student activities program for the coming year include a reorganization of the student council focusing on developing more leadership skills, increased opportunities for student involvement and a Christian service program.
Jackson
Students will start school in Jackson on Aug. 25 with a full day of school. Teacher workshops will be held Aug. 23-24.
High school registration concludes today. Junior high registration is scheduled Aug. 16-17.
New elementary students may register on Aug. 18.
St. Mary Cathedral school
The first day of classes at St. Mary Cathedral School will be Aug. 25. Students will be dismissed early that day at 1 p.m.
Teachers' meetings are scheduled on Aug. 23-24. The new principal is Carol Strattman.
St. Vincent de Paul
Classes begin Aug. 25 at St. Vincent de Paul grade school in Cape Girardeau. The first day will be a full day.
Teacher workshops are planned Aug. 23 and 24. The new principal is Rita Fisher.
Trinity Lutheran
School starts Aug. 23 at Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau.
The first day, a full day of school, will open with the traditional church service.
Teachers are now in the process of making home visits to all students in school.
Teacher workshops begin Monday.
Immaculate Conception
The first day of school at Immaculate Conception School in Jackson will be Aug. 23. Classes will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. that first day, but students will have lunch.
Letters have been sent out to parents outlining enrollment and registration guidelines.
The new principal at the school this year is Roxanne Pearce.
Meadow Heights
The Meadow Heights R-II School District will begin classes Aug. 23.
Registration for new students to the district is today and Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. New students from in grades seven through 12 should report to the high school principal's office. All new students should bring available records, report cards and immunization reports.
All students, grades nine through 12, who have not picked up their schedules for the 1993-94 school year should pick them up Aug. 17 in the principal's office. Schedules for students in grades seven and eight will be distributed during class meetings on the first day of school.
Delta
The Delta R-V School District will begin classes Sept. 7. The first day of school will be a short day. School will dismiss at 1:11 p.m.
Registration for students begins Aug. 16-17 for seniors; Aug. 18-19 for juniors; Aug. 20 and 23 for sophomores and Aug. 24 for freshmen. Eighth-grade students will enroll Aug. 25 and seventh-grade students will enroll Aug. 26. A make-up day for enrollment is Aug. 27.
Elementary students new to the district may enroll beginning Aug. 18.
Century Unit School District
Ullin, Ill.
Century Unit District will begin school Aug. 23 with student registration. Students will attend less than a half day and lunch will not be served. The first full day of school will be Aug. 24.
Kindergarten students will attend school full-day sessions and will ride the regular buses.
Both breakfast and lunch are served.
Kelso C-7
The New Hamburg-Kelso school district will begin the school year with teacher workshops on Aug. 23 and 24. The first day of school is Aug. 25.
The bus route in the New Hamburg area will begin on the southern side first and proceed with the pickup on the northern side of town. The bus run in the Kelso area will be basically the same as last year.
All high school students attending Kelly High School may ride the Kelso C-7 bus. Students attending Scott City High School should notify the school if they plan to ride the bus.
Nell Holcomb
The first day of classes for students at Nell Holcomb School will be Aug. 25. Teachers will report on Aug. 23 and 24 for workshops.
Kindergarten students will attend a half-day session; however, all kindergarten student will be served lunch.
If Highway 177 and other routes are still closed due to high water, bus route adjustments will be announced. School will open on schedule.
Students new to the district may enroll Aug. 16-20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge schools will begin Aug. 20 with a full day of school.
Registration for students new to the district continues today from 8 a.m. to noon.
All junior-senior high school students should report to school Aug. 16 to pick up their schedules. All seventh-grade students should report to school Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. for seventh-grade orientation.
Scott City
School begins Aug. 30 at Scott City schools.
The district's new superintendent is Douglas Berry.
Thomas Kelly Schools
at Benton
New students to the Kelly district in grades 9-12 may pick up their schedules today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Chaffee
School begins Aug. 23 at Chaffee. The school district is offering full-day kindergarten for the first time this fall.
Computerization is under way in the library and business department.
St. Paul Lutheran
School begins Aug. 23 at St. Paul Lutheran School in Jackson. The first day, classes dismiss early at 12:30 p.m.
Enrollment currently stands at 204; students may enroll by calling the school office.
Principal Alan Lipke said parents should receive within the next week information on this year's bus routes.
