The Heartland Citizens for Education Awareness will host a presentation, "Successful Self-Advocacy For Educational Services and Supports," from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
The free presentation, will be by Byron Koster, senior advocate for Missouri Protection and Advocacy Services. Koster will give participants a better understanding of the tools and strategies needed to become more successful when advocating in the educational system, and will provide a better understanding of laws such as IDEIA, 504 and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act that provide rights and protections in the public schools.
Also to be discussed will be resolution steps, including assistance from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.
