The May issue of a national children's magazine has published a book recommendation by Whitney Pingel, a first-grade student at Alma Schrader Elementary School.
Readers of Highlights for Children magazine were asked to recommend books other children would like to read. Whitney recommended the book, "The Art Lesson," written by Tomie dePaola.
She wrote: "My favorite author is Tomie dePaola. `The Art Lesson' was the first book my mom read to me by him. Then I became interested in all of them. His neat pictures are great. All kids will love his books."
Highlights for Children, founded 45 years ago, is written for children ages 2-12.
Whitney, the daughter of Dale and Rene Pingel, is a member of the Primary Enrichment Program at school. She participates in the Music Makers Choir and girls' auxiliary at the First Baptist Church.
She wants to be an art teacher when she grows up.
