After firing its only officer, East Cape Girardeau is searching for a new one.

On Tuesday, the East Cape Girardeau village board voted 5-1 to fire police chief William Gibson, Mayor Joe Aden confirmed Wednesday.

East Cape Girardeau will be only be patrolled by the Alexander County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police until a replacement can be found.

Aden said Gibson had been working for the city for about a year.

No details could be given as to why Gibson was terminated, because it was a personnel issue, Aden said.
