The driver of a dump truck working on the Show Me Center Parking Lot forgot to lower the hydraulic truck bed and struck the west side of the walkway bridge about 1 p.m. Thursday above New Madrid Street.

Southeast Missouri State University facilities managers shut down the walkway, which leads to the Show Me Center and the student recreation center, to check for structural damage, said associate facility management director Carolyn Figliolo.

The bed of the truck from Crowell Hauling in Sikeston, Missouri, sustained significant damage.

Cape Girardeau firefighters cleaned up hydraulic fluid that leaked onto the street.

New Madrid Street was blocked by Southeast Missouri State Department of Public Safety officers and a Cape Girardeau police officer while the dump truck was towed.
