PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- A drug checkpoint on Interstate 55 didn't catch any large shipments of narcotics Friday, but it was still effective, the Perry County sheriff said.
"This is the first time we have tried this in Perry County," Sheriff Gary Schaaf said. "We may do this sort of thing again in the future."
Along with troopers from the state Highway Patrol, deputies began stopping cars at 6 a.m. at the intestate's Brewer exit. Drug-sniffing dogs from the Highway Patrol and Sheriff's Department also assisted.
A total of 142 vehicles were stopped, resulting in one arrest and several summons, Schaaf said.
The summons involved lack of insurance and the absence of a valid driver's license. Also, two summons were issued for possession of a controlled substance, and two for possession of drug paraphernalia.
An emergency response vehicle from the Sheriff's Department was used as a mobile office at the site, so that anyone issued a summons was booked and released at the scene.
