A building was damaged but no one was injured when a car crashed through the front window of a Cape Girardeau business Wednesday.

Cape Girardeau police officer Jay Freeman said the driver of a white Kia Soul said he had been traveling west through the parking lot at Check Into Cash on William Street, then pulled into a parking spot in front of the buidling.

When he stepped on the brake, he claimed, the car lurched forward, Freeman said.

Capt. Ray Warner of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said only one person, an employee, was inside the building at the time of the crash. She was unhurt, as was the driver.

"The building doesn't seem to be structurally damaged," Warner said. Glass littered the sidewalk as well as the floor inside the business.

The owner of another business in the strip mall said he heard and felt the crash but did not see it happen.

Building owner Kevin Harris seemed calm, saying it was "just a building."

"It's not my building, it's God's. He takes care of all this stuff," Harris said.

"It could have been worse," Freeman said.
