SIKESTON -- School is set to begin Wednesday in Sikeston and in an effort to help ensure students' safety, the Department of Public Safety will be watching for those who speed in school zones.
"We will be avidly watching with radar in all of the school zones over the next week and we will even have a speed notification trailer," said DPS Capt. Drew Juden.
The speed notification trailer is a large radar device which tells drivers what speed they are driving as the approach the trailer. Juden said it will be set up in different school zones throughout the week.
"It is to help remind everybody to be cautious and for everybody to slow down over the next school year," Juden said.
Juden said speeding through school zones tends to be a problem at the beginning of the school year. "Anytime you have an area where the speed limit changes, you tend to have a few more problems," Juden said.
"People just don't pay attention because they are used to driving faster. Everyone needs a little adjustment period."
Besides watching for school zones, drivers should also be aware that school buses will be operating and to obey all rules regarding school buses and school bus zones.
"If something happens, the bus drivers will report it directly to us," Juden said.
