~ The exhibit at the Missouri State Museum is scheduled to open Dec. 7.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.-- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking artifacts that may be used in the exhibit about the USS Missouri.
A detailed, large-scale model based on the battleship USS Missouri is on display in the Missouri State Museum within the State Capitol. This 9-foot-long, brass, 1/48 scale model will form the centerpiece of the exhibit, scheduled to open Dec. 7. The public is encouraged to consider a donation or loan to the Missouri State Museum of any artifacts related to the USS Missouri suitable for inclusion in an exhibit.
The large model was built by the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II to test the placement of radio antenna on Iowa-class battleships. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Mo. displayed the model for many years. The model is currently on display in the west wing of the first floor of the Capitol at the far end of the Natural Resources Hall and open to the public free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Potential donors of USS Missouri artifacts may contact the Missouri State Museum's curator of collections at (573) 751-2854 or at DSP.State.Museum@dnr.mo.gov.
