The $48,500 is part of $12 million that was raised through such walks nationwide in September and October, Osiecki said. That money goes to fund the association's mission of preventing and curing diabetes through research and programming.

There were 49 family and corporate teams that raised money by getting sponsors for their walks. The top team was the Bank of New Madrid, which raised more than $4,700.
