Detectives hope surveillance video will solve fatal hit-and-run

Scott County sheriff’s detectives will review surveillance footage from a Benton, Missouri, business in an effort to identify a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sheriff Rick Walter said.

Jackie Crumley, 49, of Benton was walking north on County Road 401 between Route C and Highway 77 when he was struck by a pickup truck, Walter said.

Crumley was dead when sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene after being alerted by passers-by, Walter said.

Two men saw Crumley walking along County Road 401 as they drove north to Boomland fireworks and then saw Crumley’s body as they drove back south, less than 20 minutes later, Walter said.

Deputies have determined, based on a mirror and part of the headlight left at the scene after the collision, the truck that hit Crumley was a dark-colored gray or black Chevrolet Colorado from 2012 to 2014, Walter said.

The intersection of County Road 401 and Highway 77 is near the westbound exit of Interstate 55 heading to Benton. There are several businesses in the area, including an Exxon gas station and McDonald’s next to Boomland, and Missouri Great Dane trailers on County Road 401.
