Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputies have arrested a fugitive who prompted a brief lockdown Tuesday at several Jackson schools.
Sheriff's department Lt. David James said officers had a warrant to arrest a theft suspect who also was accused of violating his probation. The suspect tried to run during a traffic stop but was caught hiding in a field late Tuesday afternoon.
James said the suspect was not considered dangerous, but Wade Bartels, chief financial officer and security coordinator for the Jackson School District, said a few schools on the west side of town were locked down briefly during the search.
James said reports that his department had initiated the lockdown were not accurate.
