Dems spending heavily in lt. governor primary election race

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Democratic contenders for lieutenant governor have virtually emptied their campaign treasuries in advance of Tuesday's primary election.

As of July 22, Senate Minority Floor Leader Ken Jacob of Columbia and former Secretary of State Bekki Cook of Cape Girardeau each had less than $2,800 in cash on hand, according to their latest campaign finance disclosure reports.

During the first three weeks of July, Cook spent almost $381,700, with Jacob not far behind at $327,000 in expenditures.

Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau, after spending about $131,500, was sitting on nearly $222,000 that he could carry into the general election campaign should he claim the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor over former state Rep. Patricia Secrest of Manchester, who reported having about $19,600 in the bank. She made no expenditures.

During the recent reporting period, Jacob collected $100,454 in cash contributions, nearly double the $51,302 in receipts Cook reported.

Close to half of Jacob's money, $48,800, came from Democratic Party committees or interest groups, primarily labor unions. Cook received $11,000 from such sources, about one-fifth of her total collections.

Kinder took in $19,825, of which $1,250 came from special interest or Republican Party committees for a mere 6.3 percent of total receipts.

Secrest raised just $450, all of which came from private individuals giving $100 or less.
