WAPPAPELLO -- Demand for outdoor recreational facilities is at an all-time high these day.
"Boat ramps, camp sites, pavilions, play courts, and other facilities are getting heavy usage at Lake Wappapello," says Michael McClendon, of the Corps of Engineers.
McClendon said several facilities this year are being used by the handicapped and elderly.
"Until recently, handicapped and elderly had a difficult time accessing some facilities at the lake," he said. "Older facilities were not constructed to accommodate them. During past few years we've been upgrading many facilities to conform, to handicapped access standards."
Newly installed courtesy boat docks at the Redman Creek and Rockwood Points boat ramps have been installed, making easier access to and from boats.
"Our campgrounds now have sites designated just for the handicapped camper," said McClendon. "The sites have raised grills, wheelchair-accessible picnic tables, and paved surfaces for easier mobility."
A fishing pier at Peoples Creek, which reaches out into the lake about 10-0 feet, is accessible for the handicapped.
"More than two million people are expected to visit Lake Wappapello in search of outdoor fun this year," said McClendon. "Now, the handicapped can be part of those visitors."
