A special election set for Tuesday in Delta will let residents decide whether to spend up to $1 million worth of bonds for sewer and water system improvements for their community.

The election is one of two in the area that will be held Tuesday. The other, in Altenburg, asks voters there to raise the property tax levy to pay for construction of a new school building.

Delta's mayor, Harold Looney, when reached by phone Friday, referred questions about the sewer and water bond issue to Evelyn Nussbaum, a member of the city's board of aldermen. Nussbaum did not return a call from the Southeast Missourian after a message was left at her home Friday.

The ballot question submitted by the city of Delta to Cape Girardeau County Clerk Kara Clark Summers asks whether the city shall issue $1 million in bonds to acquire, construct, extend and improve the city's combined water and sewer system.

The bonds, along with operation and maintenance for the systems would be paid for by revenue from water and sewer bills. Polls will be open in Delta from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
