JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- About 5 percent more deer were killed during the opening weekend of the deer hunt this year than last year, according to numbers from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The department's numbers show 116,553 deer were taken across the state this past weekend, up from last year's record high of 111,002.

The top county during the season's first weekend was Callaway County, where 2,270 deer were killed. Benton County was second with 2,215, followed by Macon County with 2,179.
