Dean brings new leadership to Democrats

NEW CHAIRMAN

The Democratic National Committee elected Howard Dean, a former presidential candidate, to lead its national party.

DEMOCRATS' GOALS

Dean promised to spend much of his time in conservative states where Democrats aren't competitive, stay on offense and learn how to talk more effectively about party positions on issues.

PARTY BUILDING

His leadership plan calls for helping state parties recruit grassroots supporters. He also wants to give state parties more money but demand specifics on how it will be spent.
