The suspect in a 1980 rape in Cape Girardeau was scheduled for arraignment Monday, but his strange response to routine questions prompted a delay.
Daryl K. Davis is accused of breaking into the basement apartment of a Southeast Missouri State University student and raping her at knife point.
DNA evidence implicated Davis in the attack.
Davis, who already is serving nine life sentences for a series of sexual assaults in St. Louis County, appeared in court Monday via a video link.
Judge Gary Kamp asked Davis whether he planned to hire his own lawyer, whether he wanted to request a public defender and whether he planned to represent himself.
Davis -- speaking quietly, his eyelids drooping and a passive expression on his face -- answered "no" to all three questions.
Kamp continued the case to May 6. He advised Davis that he would have to represent himself if he had not made a decision about his legal representation by then.
