A five-session geriatric sitter training course begins Sept. 24. The course is designed to train individuals who wish to assist senior adults in the home.

Southeast Missouri Hospital and Southeast Missouri State University's department of vocational education sponsor the course.

Classes will be held at the hospital from 1:30-4 p.m. on Sept. 24 and 26, and Oct. 1, 3 and 8.

The course includes information on normal versus abnormal aging; dietary needs; assisting the elderly with personal care; stress management for caregivers; communication techniques and understanding the elderly; use of proper body mechanics in lifting or moving a person in and out of a bed or chair; emergency procedures and when to call for help; Alzheimer's disease and coping with the confused elderly.

The course is taught by a certified gerontology nurse. Registration fee is $25. For more information call Janet Stewart, 243-5349.
