In 1957, an Australian visiting California told about the children in his country entertaining themselves by twirling bamboo hoops around their waists.
Two men thought the idea was a good one and initiated what they called the "hula hoop." The hoop, one of the top 10 toys of the century by some accounts, sold more than 150 million hoops and realized more than $45 million in profits before the hula hoop craze died down a year later.
The hula hoop fad will be revived late next month in downtown Cape Girardeau.
A hula hoop contest has been added to the agenda for the Downtown Merchants Association's 13th annual fund raiser auction July 29 at 45 N. Main St.
"One of last year's highlight events at the auction was a limbo dance," said chairwoman Dionne Hoffmeister. "The response was great, and people were still doing the limbo long after the auction was over."
At this year's "beach party" themed event, the limbo will be featured again.
Tickets will be available for the event early in July.
A $10 fee includes hors d'oeuvres, provided by Port Cape Girardeau.
